When discussing job interviews, everyone always focuses on what the interviewee needs to do to prep, but what about the interviewer? If you are the person in charge of interviewing candidates at your company, what are the important factors that you need to keep in mind?

There are a few different key details that interviewers should always be paying attention to when speaking with potential new hires. Some of these aspects are more obvious than others. However, they are all significant and should be considered during every interview.

Length of Tenure at Previous Jobs

One of the many topics discussed between a hiring manager and a candidate during an interview is the potential new hire’s job history. By reviewing their resume, you should be able to see where a person worked before and for how long they stayed there.

If a potential employee stayed with a company for an extremely short amount of time or seems to switch jobs frequently, ask them about it. They should be able to explain themselves if there are legitimate reasons for this behavior.

By paying attention to this issue, you can figure out if a candidate will be dedicated to the work they will be doing with you.

You don’t want to hire someone who will end up being a short-term employee, using your business as a stepping stone to another position somewhere else. You want someone who will stick around and be committed to your company.

Vague or Overly Complicated Job Titles

Be cautious and curious if you don’t immediately recognize a job title on a person’s resume. Of course, there are common terms, such as “manager,” “associate,” and “president,” which almost every interviewer will know.

However, if a title seems vague or overly complicated, ask the candidate you are interviewing to explain it to you. Can they provide you with specific responsibilities they had when holding this position? Can they compare it a more commonly known role?

If a potential new hire is not able to sufficiently clarify the position they held before, it could be because they are lying or trying to stretch the truth in some way. No matter what, though, this type of response should raise red flags when you conduct an interview.

Communication Skills and Body Language

Communication is an essential component of any job. No matter what position you are trying to fill, it’s very like that whoever you hire will be working with other members of your business. This new hire will need to be able to communicate in a clear, concise, and respectful way.

How candidates talk to you during an interview is a sign of how they will interact with co-workers, clients, and customers. You want someone with strong communication skills that will represent not just your products or services well but you and your business as a whole.

Also, be sure to focus on potential recruits’ body language. How they physically respond to certain topics or questions may say a lot more about them than the verbal responses they give.


This last suggestion is kind of a no-brainer, but it still needs to be mentioned. An interviewee’s appearance should reflect how passionate he or she is about the job you are offering.

It doesn’t matter how expensive a candidate’s wardrobe is, or if he or she has a fancy new haircut. However, you should be able to see that he or she took time and put in an effort to look professional.

Any type of messy clothing or looks should be noted and considered as a strike against the potential employee, no matter how impressive their resume or conversation skills are.
